Chapter Eighteen
During the week after his father's funeral, Sands was too busy helping his mother make the transition to the next stage of her life to grieve. Which was fine with him. He was not ready to confront the reality of a world without Dad, and on that score he and his mother were in sync, as she had shut down her emotions completely and thrown herself into cleaning out the apartment, which actually meant ridding it of Sam's clothes and personal effects. Esther understood this about Sands, which, he supposed, was why she insisted that Sara return to New York while she asked him to help her go through Sam's things. Sands had driven Sara to the Tampa airport, and they had spent much of that time sharing memories of their father. Sara had also complimented Jane, saying that she hoped they were able to make a go of it. She brought up the bridge bombings, but Sands avoided telling her of his involvement. To Sara the bombings were more of the insane random acts of violence that had become a routine part of their time. "We grew up in paradise," she remarked. "Now we get to spend the rest of our lives wondering if we'll be blown up by terrorists." If only it were that simple, Sands thought. Before she went through security, Sara had turned and opened her arms to him and after they had hugged, she shocked him by inviting him and Jane to visit her in New York.
Unfortunately, Sam's death had not brought about a similar sea change in his mother. Sands gauged the depths of Esther's rage toward the world, her deceased husband included, by the ferocity of her devotion to the task at hand. Rating it a "10" didn't begin to give it justice. She was up at dawn and didn't stop until midnight. Moving with the alacrity of a search and destroy combat troop, she pulled Sands in her wake and he was grateful for the diversion. There were difficult moments, such as when he filled up a rental van with his father's clothes and delivered them to the Salvation Army depot, and then watched as strangers loaded the shirts, ties and pants that peopled Sands' memories of his father into large canvas bins on wheels which they rolled to a huge dumpster where they were tossed in with the discarded clothing of a multitude of others. The sense that he had not just lost his father, but had somehow nullified him, shot through him, and it wasn't until he was back at his mother's side, piling up the next load that the pain ceased.
By the end of the week the apartment was his mother's alone. At Esther's insistence, he took his father's Omega watch, a 25th anniversary present from his mother. Sands could remember admiring it when she had given it to Sam. Although he accepted it, he was not yet able to strap it onto his wrist - somehow it still belonged to his father.
